LastDayWatchers those of you who faithfully watch , already know;
The 2003 invasion of Iraq, the worst foreign policy decision in U.S. history, coincided with mission creep (“nation building”) in Afghanistan.
It strengthened what can be called the Republicans’ John Quincy Adams faction: America “goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She is the champion and vindicator only of her own.”
The 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) that Congress passed in the fearful days following the Sept. 11 attacks has been called the most far-reaching, open-ended expansion of the executive’s powers in U.S. history, it provided President George W. Bush the statutory authority for the war in Afghanistan and on ‘terror,’ and the legal underpinnings for almost any use of U.S. military force to counter terrorism anywhere across the globe for the past 13 years.
Giving birth to an unnecessary Iraq war, which had nothing to do with securing the U.S. or its allies, and it has manifestly made the region less stable and secure than it was before the invasion.
American soldiers were sacrificed year after year in the name of creating a democratic government in Iraq only to usher in a sectarian, semi-authoritarian regime whose abusive misrule helped to create the current conflict. Along the way, millions of Iraqis were displaced internally or forced into exile, over a hundred thousand died, and most of the rest have been living in a failed state for more than ten years.
The U.S. paid an appalling price in thousands of lost lives, tens of thousands wounded, and trillions of dollars wasted on a fool’s errand to “disarm” a government that had been disarmed years earlier.
The U.S. lost that war by any reasonable measure in that it threw away thousands of American lives and more than a hundred thousand Iraqi lives for the sake of creating a wrecked, impoverished country ruled by sectarian thugs.
Now any overt action against Damascus will ensure an adversarial relationship with Iran, who wields an incredible amount of influence in Iraq.
American forces committed to an anti-ISIL campaign would soon find themselves contending with Damascus and Baghdad in a role earlier similar to the enemy they sought to destroy.
Liberal interventionists and neoconservative hawks, however, view a return to the status quo in Syria as morally repugnant as the continued existence of ISIL.
Therefore the tide of public opinion has begun to flow in the direction of justice, and this is not good news for Israel or the U.S. However, it is long overdue for Palestine.
