Binocular Snapshot 09/01/2014

LastDayWatcher watch how the "self-righteousness" of the harden hart led to self destruction

Israel Radio said the step was taken in response to the kidnapping and killing of three Jewish teens by Hamas militants in the area in June.

The land seizure was the largest announced by Israel in the West Bank since the 1980s and that anyone with ownership claims had 45 days to appeal. A local Palestinian mayor said Palestinians owned the tracts and harvested olive trees on them.

The ability to change course through self-criticism, and not sheer military might, was the key to Israel’s political and military survival.

A decade after Leibowitz’s warnings about “the intoxication of national pride,” General Yehoshafat Harkabi, former head of military intelligence warned his countrymen - Israeli policies toward the Palestinians of the West Bank and Gaza, will in the long run, be self-defeating. “The settlements,” he wrote in 1984, “are an obstacle to peace, and they are a military liability, not an asset.”
There is no greater threat to our survival than this ethos of "self-righteousness", it renders us blind and unable to understand our situation—and it gives legitimacy to bad national leadership

Prime Minister Begin promoted this self-righteous ethos, but he was an amateur compared to his ideological successor

Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu, son of an American college professor and master of the American conservative political idiom, has made this "self-righteousness" the strengthening of “Israel-centered Judaism” a key element of his world view, one that resonates deeply with American Jewish officialdom.

"The town of Suleiman Bek has been liberated from Islamic State by the Iraqi Army and Peshmerga as well as local volunteers including the Peace Brigade, Badr Corps and Asaib Ahel-al-Haq," General Abdul Amir al-Zaidi, head of the Dijala Operations command

Security sources said fighting was also ongoing to retake the remaining villages still held by Islamic State fighters.

The Peace Brigade is an offshoot of Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's former armed group the Mehdi Army, while Asaib Ahel-al-Haq is an Iranian-backed group that has now entered Iraq's political mainstream.
