Three car bombs exploded at outdoor markets and on a street full of shops near Iraq's capital, the deadliest of a series of attacks across the country that killed at least 29 people Thursday
A roadside bomb struck a patrol of a pro-government, anti-al-Qaida Sunni militia, killing three and wounding seven in Tarmiyah, a Sunni town north of Baghdad, militants consider members of the group, known as the Awakening Council, as traitors since they were formed by U.S. forces during the height of Iraq's insurgency.
A bomb also went off in Baghdad's Palestine Street, killing two civilians and wounding eight, police said.
Another vehicle rigged with explosives targeting Salaheddin provincial police chief Major General Juma al-Dulaimi killed three civilians and wounded two others.
Dulaimi himself escaped unharmed from the blast in the restive city of Tikrit, which lies north of the capital.
The seizure of Deir Attiyeh, on the Damascus-Homs highway, comes two weeks into an army offensive in the Qalamoun region, important to the government for its proximity to the capital and to the rebels, as it serves as their rear base near the Lebanese border.
