"It doesn't matter that the Sunni outnumber the Shia 10 time over or the fact that they have the backing and help of the United States, they will not be able to stop the influence that is emitting out of Iran"
In Hezbollah strongholds in southern Beirut, sounds of celebratory gunfire and fireworks rang out for two hours. "Qusair has fallen," read banners hung in the streets.
Qusair's fall could boost the momentum for Syrian troops in rolling back rebel gains in other parts of central Homs province, as well as in northern Syria, where the sides have been locked in a stalemate for months. Pro-regime media outlets have said government forces are preparing to move to recapture the contested northern city of Aleppo next.
The battle marked the first major intervention by Hezbollah in the fighting, and its participation was considered a key element in the rebel defeat. The Hezbollah presence also set off an outcry from the rebels’ primary backers, including the United States, which demanded last week that it withdraw its forces.
"Whoever controls Qusayr, controls the center of the country and whoever controls the center of the country controls all of Syria,"
“The Syrian Army totally controls the Qusayr region in Homs Province after killing a large number of terrorists and capturing others,”
Syrian state television said, using the regime’s term for the rebels.
Sheikh Naim Qassem, Hezbollah’s deputy leader, said that the fall of Qusayr was a blow to the United States, Israel, and “Takfiri” groups, Sunni extremists who view as apostates those who do not share their austere interpretation of Islam.
“The victory in Qusayr is a sharp blow to the American-Israeli-Takfiri project and a glowing moment for the resistance project in Syria and there is no point to the cries of the international and regional political media in trying to change the historic and geographic realities,”
The loss of Qusayr will represent a psychological blow to rebel forces, which have been reeling from a number of tactical setbacks on the battlefield
For some, the undoing of Syria fulfills predictions that began when the U.S. military deposed Saddam Hussein in 2003, empowering the country’s Shiite majority and creating what the king of Jordan described as a “Shiite crescent” stretching from Iran to Lebanon.
The rebels accuse the government of pre-emptively arming Shiite and Alawite villages across the country, creating tension and setting a self-fulfilling prophecy in motion.
