An estimated 22 veterans commit suicide in the United States every day, a slightly higher number than the 18-per-day rate the Department of Veterans Affairs had indicated in years past, according to a VA study made public today.

"What we're seeing is an extraordinary tragedy which speaks to the horror of war and the need for us to do a much better job of assisting our soldiers and their families after they return home,"

Parts of every state west of the Mississippi River — except for Washington — are enduring drought conditions, according to Thursday's U.S. Drought Monitor, a government website that tracks drought and is updated weekly.

"The drought is firmly entrenched as we roll toward February," climatologist Mark Svoboda of the National Drought Mitigation Center writes in the monitor, "Unfortunately for the western Plains and eastern Rockies, I think the drought is going to persist, and it is going to be strong going into the springtime," AccuWeather meteorologist Paul Pastelok says. "In the heart of the drought, it doesn't look good right now."

The U.S. Embassy building in Ankara is heavily protected and located near several other embassies, including that of Germany and France. The Hurriyet newspaper said staff at the embassy took shelter in “safe room” inside the compound soon after the explosion.

Americans in Turkey were warned to avoid visiting the embassy or U.S. consulates in Istanbul and Adana until further notice and were told to register on the State Department’s website.

A suicide bomber killed 22 people on Friday in a crowded market outside two mosques from separate Muslim sects in Pakistan's restive northwest, police and hospital officials said. Two of the dead were policemen.
