Al Qaeda attack on Yemen army base kills 24
"Militants tightened their hold on parts of Yemen during an uprising that ousted veteran president Ali Abdullah Saleh in February, raising concern for the security of top oil exporter Saudi Arabia next door and nearby shipping lanes.
Al Qaeda killed 16 soldiers in an attack on an army base in south Yemen on Friday, medical and military sources said, in a further show of strength by Islamist militants despite a U.S. campaign of drone strikes to neutralize them.
Violence has intensified in the past few weeks with Washington stepping up drone, or pilotless aircraft, operations and militants carrying out retaliatory attacks on state and military targets."
"The attackers drove through several checkpoints before entering the base of the Yemeni army's 115th brigade in southern Abyan province, where a drone raid killed at least seven Qaeda members the day before, one official told the AFP news agency."
"Four members of al-Qaeda with explosive belts ... travelling in a military vehicle managed to pass through several army checkpoints to reach the camp" at Shaqra, 35km from provincial capital Zinjibar, another official said.
"Two soldiers were killed at the entrance of the base by the assailants who then continued their journey to the camp where three of the four occupants got out of their vehicle, while the driver blew himself up," said the official.
The army killed the three men who got out of the vehicle, including one who managed to escape briefly, officials said, adding that four other men who stormed the base following the explosion were also killed.
The attack came 24 hours after rockets fired from a US drone near the southern city of Jaar killed at least seven suspected members of the terror network, including a local leader, an official in the restive region said.
Several military sources said the attack was in response to the raid."
A huge car bomb explosion in Beirut on Friday killed a top Lebanese security official whose investigations implicated Syria and Hezbollah in the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik al-Hariri
"The rush-hour bomb in the centre of the Lebanese capital killed eight people and wounded about 80 others, heightening fears that Syria’s war is spilling over into Lebanon."
"Friday's bombing, reminiscent of grim scenes from Lebanon's own 1975-1990 civil war, was seen as being linked to the heightened tension between Lebanese factions on opposite sides of the conflict in Syria."
The explosion ripped through the street where the office of the anti-Damascus Christian Phalange Party is located near Sassine Square in Ashrafiyeh, a mostly Christian area."
"The scene of the bombing, says that already there were fears that the bombing meant the Syrian crisis had spilled over into Lebanon."
Lakhdar Brahimi, the UN-Arab envoy peace to Syria "warned two days ago that you cannot expect the Syrian crisis to remain within Syrian borders", she said.
It was not immediately clear if the explosion targeted any political figure in Lebanon's divided community but it occurred at a time of heightened tension between Lebanese factions on opposite sides of the Syria conflict.
Regarding who may be behind the bombing, he said: "There are many suspicions, but we will wait for the investigation to be complete."
The war in neighbouring Syria has pitted mostly Sunni fighters against President Bashar al-Assad, who is from the Alawite sect."
