LastDayWatchers as the failures continues to add up
Less than two hours after President Obama left Afghanistan, powerful explosions shook Kabul on Wednesday
"Suicide attackers struck a private residential compound used by hundreds of foreigners in the east of the city, breaching the outer perimeter and leaving at least eight dead — seven Afghans and a guard — about 17 wounded, officials said.
Insurgents have again managed to penetrate Kabul and attack an international target, this time within hours of a visit by an American president.
Mr. Obama had arrived at Bagram Air Base outside Kabul late Tuesday. He then flew to Kabul to sign a strategic partnership agreement with President Hamid Karzai laying out the West’s long-term security commitment to Afghanistan."
"The incident not only underscores the difficulties that remain as Afghan security forces take control of increasingly larger share of the country, but also the potential fallout from the Afghan insurgency during high-profile visits."
“With this attack we want to send a message to Obama that the Afghans will welcome you with attacks. He needs to [remove US] forces from Afghanistan. Not kill the innocent Afghans and destroy the Afghans country. You don’t need to sign agreements, you need to focus on how to get out of this country,” says Zabiullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban.
“This attack was planned in a very short time, just after the mujahideen got the news of Obama’s arrival.”
The attack comes just after the Taliban announced the start of their annual spring offensive in which they increase military activity during warm weather months."
Two Nato Troops Killed by IED Blast
"Two Nato troops died Wednesday from the blast of an improvised explosive device in eastern Afghanistan, at least four Afghan civilians, including a child, and a Nepalese security guard was among the dead, while as many as ten Afghan school students were among the 18 wounded, officials said."
Names of the Dead
"The Department of Defense has identified 1,941 American service members who have died as a part of the Afghan war and related operations. It confirmed the deaths of the following Americans recently:
PRUITT, Scott E., 38, Master Sgt., Marines; Gautier, Miss.; First Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group.
SANNICOLAS, Christian R., 20, Pfc., Army; Anaheim, Calif.; 82nd Airborne Division."
