Taliban blitz Kabul with "spring offensive" attacks

"Heavy explosions, rockets and gunfire rattled Kabul on Sunday as Afghanistan's Taliban launched a "spring offensive" with multiple attacks targeting Western embassies, the NATO force's headquarters and the parliament building.

The assault, one of the most serious on the capital since U.S.-backed Afghan forces removed the Taliban from power in 2001, highlighted the ability of militants to strike the heavily guarded diplomatic zone even after more than 10 years of war.

It was also another election-year setback in Afghanistan for U.S. President Barack Obama, who wants to present the long campaign against the Taliban as a success before the departure of most foreign combat troops by the end of 2014."

"It is also a message to those foreign commanders who claim that the Taliban have lost their momentum. We have just showed that we are here and we can stage an attack whenever we want.”

A NATO spokesman confirmed that multiple attacks had occurred across Kabul, potentially in as many as seven locations."

Police Commander, Three Officers Killed in Kapisa Explosion

"A police commander and three other officers were killed in a bomb blast in eastern Kapisa province on Sunday, officials said.

A convoy of police vehicles were driving in Mahmud-e-Raqi, the capital of Kapisa province early Sunday, when one of the vehicles struck a roadside bomb, killing all four people inside, Sediq Sediqi, spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Interior Affairs told TOLOnews.

Mahmud-e-Raqi police commander Jan Agha Faizi died in the blast, he said, the bomb appears to have been detonated remotely, he added."

Pakistani Taliban assault prison, free nearly 400 inmates

"The Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan launched a nighttime assault on a prison in northwestern Pakistan, freeing nearly 400 inmates, including "hardcore militants."

A Taliban force estimated at 150 fighters launched the attack on the prison in the district of Bannu at 1:00 a.m. local time and clashed with prison personnel for nearly two hours, according to AFP. The heavily armed Taliban fighters blew open the front gate and lobbed grenades and fired on prison guards during the attack. Other Taliban fighters blocked off the surrounding roads to prevent Pakistani reinforcements from reaching the prison.

Ihsanullah Ihsan, a spokesman for the Taliban Movement of Pakistan, claimed credit for the assault and said the group would provide more details on those who were freed.

"We attacked the Bannu prison and got our special members freed," Ihsan told AFP. "In a couple of days when all of them have reached their designated places we will issue details about them. At the moment I cannot give you exact numbers."
