Spate of Bombs Kills 10 in Iraq
"Bombs targeting security forces struck two Iraqi cities Thursday, killing at least 10 people and wounding dozens in a reminder of the country's vulnerability as U.S. troops leave.
All of the dead were members of Sahwa, or Awakening Councils, a Sunni militia that sided with U.S. forces against Al Qaeda in a major turning point of the war. The Sahwa have since been targeted by insurgents who call them traitors.
A suicide bomber blew himself up after joining the line of Sahwa early in the morning, according to an Interior Ministry official. Minutes later, a car bomb blew up about 30 feet away."
"We heard the sound of an explosion inside the headquarters followed by shooting. We felt panicked, fearful and confused and we started running to the main street in fear the explosion was to be followed by another,"
"We saw a civilian car heading towards us and we felt it was a suicide car bomb. Then it went off and I flew into the air and then hit the ground," he said. "I saw at least five or six people who were only body parts."
The number of civilians killed in violence in Iraq rose in October to 161 from 110 in September, according to the latest government figures."
" The United Nations says overall violence is at its worst since the war began in 2001."
Last week, a suicide car bomber killed 17 people in Kabul, including 13 troops and civilian employees of the NATO-led forces, the latest bold attack in the Afghan capital that deepened questions about NATO claims of progress."
7 Killed in Foreign Construction Company Attack in Herat
"At least five suicide bombers and two security guards were killed on Thursday morning when insurgents attacked a foreign construction compound in western Herat province, local officials said."
" Afghan authorities said that four Afghan laborers working for a development company on a road project in a rural area of Kandahar were kidnapped and found beheaded. Kandahar officials have not said for whom the laborers worked."
Afghan and coalition forces evacuated 31 civilians from the compound during the attack, which took place about a half mile from NATO’s regional headquarters in Heart Province, said Sgt. Juan Ardura Santa Engracia, a spokesman for the regional NATO command. "
"Given the lack of professionalism even as NATO forces still actively patrol with their Afghan counterparts, many Afghans worry what will happen as the international presence recedes."
Meanwhile, limited national unity and a number of ethnic faultlines continue to haunt Afghanistan and influence the security forces, “The current national security force is under the shadow of the ethnic, linguistic, regional, and organizational issues,” says Shahnawaz Tanai, a former Afghan general and military expert.
“When the foreigners leave Afghanistan, these issues will turn into a serious and dangerous problem. Every security person or soldier will think about their ethnicity and not care about Afghanistan.”
Afghan police struggle with skills as fundamental as crowd control, often firing live ammunition to disperse large groups. In the first six months of this year alone, police killed 25 civilians and injured 159 in crowd-control incidents."
