Kabul suicide bomb kills 13 U.S. troops, civilian

"A suicide car bomber killed 13 American troops and civilian employees of the NATO-led force in the Afghan capital Kabul Saturday, the deadliest single ground attack against the coalition in 10 years of war in Afghanistan.

Saturday's killings came less than two months after insurgents launched a 20-hour assault on the U.S. embassy in the capital.

The attack is likely to heighten worries about the reach of insurgent forces as the United States and its allies prepare to hand over responsibility for security to Afghan forces by 2014.

In two other attacks Saturday, three Australians and an Afghan linguist were killed in Uruzgan province in southern Afghanistan when an attacker wearing an Afghan National Army uniform opened fire on them, in Kunar province, east of Kabul, a teen female suicide bomber killed herself and wounded several National Directorate of Security (NDS) members in an attack on the NDS building.

Violence across Afghanistan is at its worst since the start of the war 10 years ago, according to the United Nations, despite the presence of more than 130,000 foreign troops."

"The attacks in the heavily guarded capital underscore the resilience of the Taliban and NATO’s difficulties in closing off militants’ routes into the city from havens in Pakistan, despite entreaties to the Pakistanis and a major offensive along the border."

The attack on the bus, known as a Rhino because of its heavy armor, took place on a road often traveled by military trainers from NATO bases in downtown Kabul to the Kabul Military Training Center."

"The Taliban first had to build a bomb big enough to penetrate the Rhino's armor, and then they had to position the suicide bomber to execute the attack," the official said. "Clearly they have been observing our movements and timed this attack."

The attack in Kabul was likely carried out by what US military officials have referred to as the Kabul Attack Network, which is made up of fighters from the Taliban, the Haqqani Network, and Hizb-i-Islami Gulbuddin, and cooperates with terror groups such as the Lashkar-e-Taiba and al Qaeda."

"That so many foreign forces were killed in the capital city, regarded as one of the most secure areas of the country, will prove a serious point of concern for security officials and Afghans alike."
