Binocular Snapshot for 9/13/2011

LastDayWatchers observe in your LOUPE the true realities on the ground

In the most direct assault since the American embassy opened here nine years ago, heavily armed insurgents wearing suicide vests put the embassy and the nearby NATO headquarters in their crosshairs

"Showing the Taliban’s ability to enter even the most heavily fortified districts in the country.

The assault from the building was all the more dismaying because it suggested the involvement of many people who would have allowed heavily armed men to enter the city and get through the cordon that surrounds the capital’s center.

Although large areas of rural Afghanistan have long been thought to be heavily infiltrated by the Taliban, the nation’s capital, Kabul, is widely viewed as relatively safe because of the international presence and the large numbers of Afghan security and intelligence forces based there."

Insurgents have targeted Kabul landmarks before, but this attack’s proximity to the city’s most secure zone raises questions about Taliban infiltration into even the most sensitive ranks

"In particular, the attack raises questions about Taliban infiltration into the ranks of even the most sensitive forces.

“We’ve suspected for quite awhile that the Taliban have deeply penetrated the Afghan security forces but to be able to do this in this secure zone shows a great deal of penetration, it becomes more and more difficult for international forces to trust their Afghan counterparts.”

The attack began in the early afternoon with an unknown number of fighters taking over a partially constructed high-rise building about 300 meters from the US embassy. Intended to be a shopping mall, the roughly 14-story building is mostly just cement without windows or doors."

The strike, which came two days after U.S. commemorations of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, appeared to center on the well-fortified "green zone" where the U.S. Embassy and the headquarters of NATO's International Security Assistance force are housed.

The capital, and the rest of Kabul province, are now nominally under the control of Afghan security forces, in line with a plan to hand over security responsibilities by 2014."

"CIA Director David Petraeus, testifying at a congressional hearing in Washington Tuesday, said Afghan forces were clearing the building"

The building is next to Abdul Haq Square, a few blocks from the U.S. Embassy, an intelligence officer told CNN."

Names of the Dead

"The Department of Defense has identified 1,750 American service members who have died as a part of the Afghan war and related operations. It confirmed the deaths of the following Americans recently:

A Lid on Iraq Doesn't Produce Stability Under the Lid

"The implications of any trend in violence, up or down, for the advisability of continuing the U.S. military mission there, however, have never been self-evident.

The U.S.-assisted security effort is not bringing Iraq any closer to political reconciliation and stability, the end-of-year deadline for extracting U.S. troops from Iraq should be observed

This is especially true of one of the indicators of instability that O'Hanlon mentions: a significant presence in Iraq of al-Qaeda, which wasn't there at all before 2003.

Iraqis gotta do what they gotta do, even if that means waging more civil war. It ultimately does them no good, and it certainly does the United States no good, to keep intervening in their affairs with the vain hope of avoiding the unavoidable."
