Gunmen kill 5 relatives of Sunni fighter in Iraq

"Gunmen wearing military-style uniforms broke into the house of a pro-government Sunni militiaman early on Wednesday and killed five members of his family, including three children, Iraqi officials said.

Police said the gunmen likely were targeting al-Zobaie, who is a member of the Iraqi Sahwa, or Awakening Councils. The group joined forces with U.S. troops at the height of the Iraq war to fight al-Qaida. Ever since then, it has been a target for Sunni insurgents who call its members traitors.

Insurgents have stepped up attacks in Iraq recently as the U.S. military prepares to withdraw from the country by the end of the year."

"They stormed the house and shot randomly at the family while they were sleeping," said a police source at the hospital in Abu Ghraib, adding the Sahwa fighter was not at home during the attack"

The Sahwa, recruited mainly from Iraq's Sunni Arab minority and including former insurgents who turned against al Qaeda's Iraqi affiliate, are credited with helping turn the tide of the sectarian warfare that gripped Iraq in 2006-07.

In August, al Qaeda asked the ex-fighters who joined forces with the U.S. military and the Shi'ite-led government to return to its ranks, threatening to attack those who did not "repent."

And the failures will continue to add up

Civilian Deaths on the Rise in Afghanistan: UN

"There have been far more civilian casualties caused by security incidents in Afghanistan compared to a year ago, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says in a new report.

As of the end of August, the average monthly number of incidents for 2011 was up 39% from the same period in 2010, Mr Ban Ki-moon said in his report.

Most deaths and injuries were caused by armed clashes and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), the report said."

8 More Police Officers Killed in Afghan Province

"One officer was missing after the attack, and police officials are investigating whether he betrayed his comrades to the Taliban.

Eight police officers were killed overnight at a hilltop checkpoint in the fourth incident in three months taking aim at the police in Helmand Province.

The attack came just a day after a suicide bomber attacked a shop in Helmand’s provincial capital, Lashkar Gah, that was owned by an Afghan who supplied the police with bread, cooking oil and firewood as well as other items.

The killings in Helmand came as the United Nations released its quarterly report Wednesday on Afghanistan, which noted that there had been a nearly 40 percent increase in violent incidents in June, July and August over the same period last year.

The vast majority were the result of insurgent attacks. The subset of suicide attacks, however, was down over the same period.

Most striking was the continued “campaign of intimidation” through assassinations of high-ranking Afghan government officials, said the report, noting that 181 individuals were killed in July and August.

Among those killed during the three months were a number of high-profile figures including President Hamid Karzai’s half brother, Ahmed Wali Karzai, who led the Kandahar provincial council; Hikmatullah Hikmat, the head of Kandahar’s religious council; Jan Mohammed Khan, an adviser to President Karzai from Oruzgan Province; and Ghulam Haider Hamidi, the mayor of Kandahar"
