Senior finance official assassinated in Iraq
"Baghdad gunmen assassinated a senior finance ministry official and wounded a senior judge, while a roadside bomb in northern Iraq
Additionally, officials said gunmen shot judge Munir Hadad in his hand during a drive-by shooting on a highway in central Baghdad in a failed assassination attempt. Hadad served as the spokesman for the Iraqi High Tribunal formed to prosecute former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and his aides.
Separately, Brig. Gen. Sarhat Qadir said a detonated bomb hit a car carrying four people near the city of Kirkuk, some 180 miles (290 kilometers) north of Baghdad. Three were killed and the fourth person was wounded in the explosion."
US military deaths in Iraq war at 4,477
"As of Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at least 4,477 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
The figure includes nine military civilians killed in action, at least 3,525 military personnel died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers, the AP count is four fewer than the Defense Department's tally, last updated Tuesday at 10 a.m. EDT.
The latest identifications reported by the military:
Sgt. Andy C. Morales, 32, of Longwood, Fla.; died Sept. 22 in Baghdad, Iraq; assigned to the 143rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), Orlando, Fla.
Staff Sgt. Estevan Altamirano, 30, of Edcouch, Texas; died Sep. 18 in Tikrit, Iraq, of injuries suffered in a noncombat-related incident; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas."
Roadside Bomb Kills 16 Party Guests in Herat
"Sixteen people - mainly women and children - died on Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded under a van carrying guests returning from an engagement party, local officials said.
"Around 1 pm today, a passenger bus returning from a wedding party hit a roadside bomb in Shindand district killing 16 people, said Mohayudin Noor, a spokesman for Herat's provincial governor.
Herat police spokesman Noor Khan Nikzad blamed the Taliban for the attack."
Suicide attack in Lashkar Gah Kills 3 Policemen
"Three policemen and two civilians died on Tuesday after a suicide bomber targeted a police truck parked near Helmand's police headquarters, local officials said.
Twenty six others - including 10 police officers and six children - were wounded in the attack, the bomber waited for a police truck to stop at a bread shop just outside the gates of the police headquarters before driving towards the truck and detonating his explosives.
"The suicide bomber detonated his explosive devices loaded in a corolla car near the police headquarters around 10:30 am today," Daud Ahmadi, a spokesman for Helmand's provincial governor said."
