Nine dead in Taliban assault on British Council in Kabul

" Taliban attackers laid siege to a British cultural center in the Afghan capital on Friday, killing at least nine people during an hours-long assault on the 92nd anniversary of Afghanistan's independence from British rule."

"At least one NATO soldier was among the dead, officials said"

The violence was the latest in a series of high-profile attacks in the capital region that have added to a growing sense of unease here, far from the Taliban’s strongholds in the south and east.

It underscored the Taliban’s shifting focus toward softer, non-military targets in the face of intense pressure from American and NATO forces that began with last year’s surge.

Despite the recent attacks, NATO officials say violence in the country is starting to decline from last year’s levels, which were the highest since the war began.

But the attack in Kabul, coming on the same day a suicide bomber killed more than 40 people at a mosque in Pakistan, underscored the persistent instability of the region,

where American forces have been engaged for nearly decade as the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks approaches."

"A brazen attack that underscored militants' ability to unleash large-scale assaults even in the heavily secured Afghan capital"

The Afghan Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on the compound housing the British Council, saying it was meant to coincide with the anniversary of Afghanistan's independence from Britain 92 years ago."

"The British were defeated on the same day and we wanted to remind them that as your grandfathers were defeated on this day, you will also be followed and attacked everywhere. You will be defeated the same as your grandfathers were"

says Zabiullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban.

"Our message to the Afghan government is that ... they cannot stop the willing [individuals] of the Afghan nation from attacking anywhere."

Attacks inside Afghanistan’s capital city are rare and a cause for serious concern as international forces begin reducing their numbers here and transferring security responsibility to Afghan forces."

"With its fortified double set of walls, "airlock" entry system and expensive guards hired from the ranks of retired Gurkhas, the occupants of the British Council compound in Kabul could be forgiven for feeling at times more like prisoners than teachers and cultural ambassadors"

Some journalists wore flak jackets and Kevlar helmets to report from the streets of the relatively secure Afghan capital, while the tell tale "whizzing" noise indicates bullets are passing nearby at one point sent reporters piling into drainage ditches for cover."

At least three Afghan policemen were killed in a roadside bomb blast in western Herat province on Friday morning

"The incident happened when their vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb in Shindand district of Herat this morning, Muhaiyuddin Noori, spokesman for Herat governor told TOLOnews reporter.

Militants use Improvised Explosive Devices to target Afghan and foreign forces in different parts of the country, but the main victims are often civilians.

The incident took place as 23 other Afghan civilians were wounded on Thursday in a roadside bomb blast in Obe district of Herat."

Names of the Dead

"The Department of Defense has identified 1,729 American service members who have died as a part of the Afghan war and related operations. It confirmed the deaths of the following Americans this week:

JENSEN, Dennis G., 21, Specialist, Army; Vermillion, S.D.; 153rd Engineer Battalion, 196th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.

SEALS, Joshua M., 21, Specialist, Army; Porter, Okla.; 279th Infantry, 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Oklahoma National Guard."

The extensions of terror expand

Suicide bomber kills at least 40 at Pakistan mosque

"The blast, which injures about 100 people, occurs in the town of Jamrud in the Khyber tribal district near the Afghan border. The area is a stronghold for Taliban militants waging an insurgency against the U.S.-allied Pakistani government.

Khyber, the gateway into Afghanistan for NATO supply trucks, remains a stronghold for Taliban militants waging an insurgency against the U.S.-allied Pakistani government.

"A hail of missiles hit the towns of Ashdod, Beersheba, Ashkelon and the smaller Sdot Negev, Shar Hanegev and Eshkol villages in a continuous blitz Friday, Aug. 19"

Ten worshippers were injured - two seriously - when one of the six Grads aimed at Ashdod hit a synagogue. Police detonated a second in a controlled explosion. The town's population is advised to stay in sheltered spaces."

"We know very well that many militants from Al-Qaeda are now working on the ground in this part of the Sinai, and they can get in and out of the Gaza Strip," says Emad Gad, a political analyst at the Ahram Center for Poltical and Strategic Studies in Cairo.
