Suicide bombers, gunmen kill 22 in central Afghanistan

"Taliban suicide bombers killed at least 22 people in a bold attack on a governor's compound in central Afghanistan during a security meeting Sunday

Afghanistan's Interior Ministry said 22 people were killed and 34 wounded. The dead included 16 government employees and six police

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the Parwan attack. Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Islamist group, said the assault began when a suicide car bomber detonated his explosives at the gate of the compound.

"Many people were killed, including Americans, but we still don't have the exact information,"

Reuters Television showed Salangi talking on the phone as officials rushed anxiously around his office. In the middle of the raid, he told Afghan TV his forces were fighting back."

"Witnesses said the attackers managed to reach the governor’s office in the second building they came to, killing most of their victims there"

However, the governor was holding his meeting in a third building, because it had the only room large enough, and the attackers never reached that one.

The attack was particularly brazen. Directly opposite the governor’s office are the local Afghan National Army headquarters, and the police headquarters are only about 400 yards away."

Twin Blasts Kill 5 Iraqi Army Personnel In Baghdad

"A pair of bombs hit an Iraqi army patrol in north Baghdad, killing five security personnel and injuring 10 other people, security and medical officials said.

Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, a spokesman for Baghdad's military operations command, said the first roadside bomb went off while the patrol was traveling through the Sunni neighborhood of Azamiyah. The second bomb exploded when security forces rushed to the scene seconds later.

Two army officers and three soldiers were killed in the attack at about 8 a.m., al-Moussawi said. He didn't say how many people were wounded.

Attacks still occur, particularly in Baghdad, where al-Qaida militants appear determined to show they are not a spent force. They often target Iraqi security forces as a way to undermine security and to destabilize the country."

Causing the plundering to mount up as well

"We have wasted £14bn on going to war in Afghanistan, and we are losing hundreds of lives in a futile war propping up a failed state - already far more than the £8bn spent on going to war in Iraq," British former Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesman Lord Oakeshott said"

The United Kingdom has already wasted £14bn on the war in Afghanistan and cannot afford to waste any more in military operations there at a time of financial crisis, Lord Oakeshott has said.

"That's £500 for every taxpayer at a time when the public and household purses are stretched to breaking point."

The comments came after he was given the latest figures on the cost of war from a written parliamentary question last month, which showed that the total spending from 2001 to 2010 has been £10bn.

"Britain would be a far safer and stronger country if we spent this money fighting gang warfare and illiteracy. The outlook is bleak when a fifth of our young people cannot read, write or add up properly ... virtually unemployable in a 21st-century developed society,"
