Two American soldiers have been killed in central Iraq, the military said on Friday

"Reporting the first fatalities since June, the deadliest month for American forces in the country for three years.

"Two US service members were killed Thursday while conducting operations in central Iraq," said a brief statement by the military, which did not mention how or where they had died.

In June, 14 American soldiers were killed in Iraq, most of theme in rocket attacks, making it the deadliest month since June 2008 when there were 23 fatalities.

Thursday's deaths raise the full number of American military fatalities in Iraq since the 2003 US-led invasion to 4,471

Iran is stepping up its support for Shiite militants in Iraq, supplying them with more sophisticated weapons

"Admiral Mike Mullen said Iran had made a decision to curtail its support for Shiite factions in 2008 but has now increased its activity in Iraq, sending in lethal arms that were being used against American forces.

"Iran is very directly supporting extremist troops which are killing our troops," Mullen told reporters at a Pentagon Press Association luncheon.

Roadside bomb kills 2 Iraqi soldiers

"Officials say a roadside bombing west of Baghdad has killed two Iraqi army officers.

The officials say the bomb exploded at dawn Friday as an Iraqi army patrol was passing by a village near the predominantly Sunni suburb of Abu Ghraib, west of the capital.

Attacks on Iraqi forces have stepped up in recent months as the U.S. military prepares to withdraw from the country."

NATO forces said Thursday that they had unwittingly killed several women and children

Violence erupts in Karachi, Pakistan; at least 80 dead

"Police in Pakistan's largest city, Karachi, struggled Friday to rein in a wave of violence that has claimed the lives of at least 80 people in the last four days and left sections of the city largely deserted.

To quell the latest outbreak of killings, police have been given orders to shoot on sight gunmen responsible for the violence, said Sharjeel Memon, Sindh province information minister.

At least 1,000 members of a paramilitary police force, the Frontier Corps, have been deployed in the worst-hit neighborhoods in an effort to restore calm.

In the first half of the year, 1,138 people have been killed in Karachi, according to statistics compiled by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan."
