9 Killed, 12 Hurt in Kabul Gun Battle

"Kabul gun battle that lasted for about two hours on Saturday afternoon took the lives of 9 people, including two policemen while 12 others were wounded in the attack, security officials say."

"Three suicide bombers attacked a police compound in Kabul's old city Saturday, killing four police officers and five civilians before they were overcome by police."

The attack by militants disguised as Afghan soldiers -- a pattern that has become increasingly common -- started around 1:30 p.m. in a neighborhood dense with small vendors and shoppers. As the attackers approached the station, police reportedly noticed one acting suspiciously and shot him.

The second attacker then detonated his vest, killing nine people, including an intelligence officer, who happened to be standing near the entrance. The blast also wounded two policemen and 10 civilians.

Taking advantage of the diversion, the third attacker then slipped into the compound and entered one of the buildings, where he battled police for over two hours before they managed to kill him."

"Right after the first suicide attack happened, people were panicking out of the Kabul Market known as Mandawi, the biggest wholesale market in Kabul that is full of businessmen and vendors almost at any time of the day."

The incident happened hours after Afghan President Hamid Karzai told reporters at a press conference that the United States is in direct talks with the Taliban to broker a peace settlement."

"Also today in Afghanistan, the Taliban launched a series of attacks against ISAF's supply lines in the southeast and the west. The Taliban killed five security guards in Nimroz province and four more in Ghazni province."

Fifteen trucks transporting fuel to ISAF forces were destroyed in the attack. Also in Ghazni, insurgents who are thought to be "Taliban who came from Pakistan" attacked 26 villages today. And eight Pakistani Taliban fighters were reported to have been killed during fighting in Ghazni yesterday."

"Insurgents have attacked on 26 villages in Ghazni province, looting and torching them, local officials said on Saturday."

The insurgents who wore clothes similar to those of Afghan Kochis (nomads), attacked on 26 villages in Nahur district of Ghazni province, provincial council representatives said.

It comes as four security guards escorting a Nato convoy were killed and four others were wounded by roadside bombs in Ghazni today, Minister of Interior Affairs said in a statement."

The so-called "isolation" of Iran will fail as well

Iran's defense minister made a landmark visit to Afghanistan on Saturday

"to bolster ties as Kabul prepares to assume security control from NATO-led forces and Washington seeks to wind down its almost decade-old tenure.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran considers Afghanistan's security as its own security, has put a lot of effort toward stability in Afghanistan and will continue to help in this regard,"

Iranian state broadcaster IRIB quoted Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi as saying.

Vahidi's visit, during which he met Afghan counterpart Abdul Rahim Wardak, was the first by an Iranian defense minister in 92 years

"On this trip I hope to witness the expansion of defense ties between the two countries," Vahidi said."

Russia is to send its Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko to the ceremony marking the start of operations at the Bushehr nuclear power plant in southern Iran.

"Sajjadi pointed to a recent meeting he has had with officials from Russia's nuclear agency Rosatom. “The Russian officials said during the meeting that, in the first ten days of August, [they] are prepared to inaugurate this power plant and electricity to enter the national grid,”

Iran's Ambassador to Moscow Seyyed Mahmoud-Reza Sajjadi said the official is to attend the ceremony for connecting the plant to the Islamic Republic's electricity grid."

As you continue to see the ways of God

"Fukushima is the biggest industrial catastrophe in the history of mankind," Arnold Gundersen, a former nuclear industry senior vice-president, told Al Jazeera."

"Fukushima has three nuclear reactors exposed and four fuel cores exposed.

"You probably have the equivalent of 20 nuclear reactor cores because of the fuel cores, and they are all in desperate need of being cooled, and there is no means to cool them effectively."

The operator of Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant has suspended an operation to clean up radioactive water only hours after it had begun as radiation levels rose faster than expected.

"The level of radiation at a machine to absorb caesium has risen faster than our initial projections," a spokesman for Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), said on Saturday."
