9 Americans killed when Afghan pilot opens fire at Kabul airport

"Eight U.S. troops and an American contractor were killed early Wednesday when a veteran Afghan military pilot opened fire on trainers during a meeting in a military compound near Kabul International Airport.

The Taliban quickly claimed responsibility in what it said was the latest attack by an insurgent infiltrator.

The pilot began shooting during a meeting in the operations room of the Afghan National Army Air Corps building about 10 a.m. after having an argument with a foreign colleague."

"Taliban sympathizers have infiltrated the Afghan security forces and that even the most secure locations are subject to attack."

The assault was at North Kabul International Airport, which is home to NATO's Air Training Command Afghanistan. It's one of the most heavily guarded locations in the capital. On April 16, an Afghan soldier attacked a group of American soldiers with grenades at a forward operating base in eastern Nangarhar province. Five U.S. soldiers were killed outright and a sixth died two days later in Germany, where he'd been taken for treatment. Four Afghans also were killed.

The attack was the single deadliest attack on international forces here since June 28, 2005, when a Taliban rocket struck a NATO helicopter in Kunar province, killing 16 U.S. soldiers.

In a statement posted on the Taliban website, spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the assailant died "when he ran out of bullets."

"The US relationship with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who America helped install in power, is rocky and there are indications that Afghan security forces, slated to take control of some parts of this country this summer, are not prepared"

The murders today point to the most crucial question about the war in Afghanistan, as the summer fighting season fast approaches: Are enough Afghan soldiers and police prepared and sufficiently loyal to make the US vision for Afghanistan a reality? This summer is already shaping up to be unusually violent.

Sami Kovanen from Indicium Consulting says insurgent attacks are up about 80 percent this spring compared with last spring, and that at the moment there are over 400 insurgent attacks a week throughout Afghanistan."

"Watch" how the "plundering" will continues

"The oversight body for US spending in Afghanistan said the Afghan ministry of interior doesn't know how many police are in its employ and that there are indications that the ministry pays salaries to Afghans who don't work.

The international community has spent about $1.3 billion on the Afghan National Police since 2002."

And see how the failures continue to mount up

Fatah and Hamas agree to historic Palestinian reconciliation deal

"Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement hammered an historic reconciliation deal with the rival Hamas group on Wednesday, agreeing to form an interim government and fix a date for general election within the year.

The deal, which took many officials by surprise, was thrashed out in Egypt and followed a series of secret meetings.

"The two sides signed initial letters on an agreement. All points of differences have been overcome," said Taher Al-Nono, the Hamas government spokesman in Gaza."

"The agreement is, in its way, a version of the Arab spring shaking regimes from Libya to Syria and giving hope of change after years of impasse"

Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, had pushed in recent months for reconciliation with Hamas, despite differences and animosity.

First indications from Jerusalem, in the form of an angry reaction from Israel's prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, suggested real alarm.

But above all it is a challenge to Israel, the US and EU, which have all shunned Hamas as a terrorist organisation since its shock victory in Palestinian elections in 2006."

"It would override the Palestinian-Israeli coordinating panel operating under US supervision"

Because neither Washington nor Jerusalem would agree to Hamas oversight, even if only indirect, of their security and undercover activity."

Hamas will final gain membership of the PLO after being shut out for many years.

Since any Israel-Palestinian peace accord would be with the PLO rather than the Palestinian Authority,

The way is opened for the Oslo Interim Peace Accords to be revoked in the same ways as future elections in Egypt would enable a future legislature and administration to revoke the Egyptian peace treaty with Israel.

intelligence sources report that neither Washington nor Ankara, and especially Jerusalem, had the slightest inkling that a Palestinian accord was in the works or achievable at such high speed.

They were all caught napping as a result of overconfidence, the absence of strategic forethought and planning and failed intelligence.

Substantial adjustments will have to be made in the three capitals to prepare for the pictures to be broadcast from Cairo next week."

"Israel's isolation in the region is almost unprecedented."
