34 killed in Iraqi raid on Iranian exile camp

"A U.N. spokesman said Thursday in the first independent death toll of the raid that has drawn sharp rebukes from Baghdad's Western allies.

U.N. human rights spokesman Rupert Colville in Geneva said a team of U.N. observers saw 28 bodies still at the camp during a Wednesday visit to the exiles' compound in eastern Diyala province.

Most of the bodies appeared to have been shot, he said.

Three of the bodies appeared to have been crushed to death, a Western diplomat in Baghdad said — likely from being run over by a car.

"It's clearly a very serious incident and we are trying to get more information," Colville said. Women were among the dead, he said."

Roadside bombs kill 3 at market south of Baghdad

"Iraqi officials say roadside bombs have killed three people at a market south of Baghdad.

A police official says two policemen were among the dead in the morning blasts Thursday in Mahmoudiya, a town about 20 miles (30 kilometres) south of Baghdad.

He says nine people also were wounded in explosions, set off by a pair of roadside bombs.
The casualties were confirmed by a hospital official.

Attacks still happen nearly every day.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media."

Militant attacks kill 5 in Afghanistan

"Violence has once again gripped Afghanistan as militants target Afghan and US-led forces in separate attacks across the war-ravaged country, claiming at least five lives.

Despite the presence of about 150,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan, insecurity is on the rise across the country since the US-led war began there in 2001.

Taliban militants have intensified their attacks on Afghan and US-led troops in the Asian country in the past months."

In three separate attacks Thursday, suicide bombers targeted Afghan police and government officials, killing three Afghan police and injuring a half dozen bystanders

"Several would-be suicide bombers teamed up to attack an Afghan police training center Thursday morning in Aryub Jaji, a border town in eastern Paktia province, according to spokesmen for NATO forces and the Paktia governor's office

After the attackers exchanged fire with Afghan forces at the center, some fled, one was shot before he could enter the training compound and another detonated a bomb at the center's front gate, according to Rohullah Samoon, a spokesman for the Paktia governor.

The explosion killed three police and wounded at least two more, Samoon said.

Taliban militants took responsibility for both attacks, claiming they killed scores of police and security forces.

He claimed two suicide bombers succeeded in detonating explosive vests in Paktia and that the Kabul bombing was retaliation for attacks on Taliban forces."

"The Taliban are conducting a campaign of suicide attacks and assassinations as part of their "spring offensive" against ISAF and Afghan forces and the Afghan government."

The Department of Defense has identified 1,517 American service members who have died as a part of the Afghan war and related operations.
