Ugly American Strategy: The Growing U.S. Security Presence in Mexico

"There have been numerous media accounts about the use of Predator drones in Afghanistan and Pakistan—and occasionally in such places as Yemen. But we now find that those deadly unmanned aerial vehicles have also been present in the skies over Mexico for the past two years.

It is bad enough that the American people were unaware of that fact, but much worse is that the Mexican people and the Mexican Congress were not told.

When the story broke earlier this month that the Predator drones were flying over Mexican territory in an effort to locate suspected drug traffickers and track their movements, the reaction in Mexico was swift and largely unfavorable.

What upset critics in Mexico’s legislature and much of the news media was that those drones had been operating without anyone outside the Calderon administration being informed.

Foreign Relations Secretary Patricia Espinosa rushed to quiet the brewing storm, insisting in a hastily called meeting with senators that Mexico’s sovereignty had not been compromised.

There wasn’t much evidence of Mexican government control or even influence regarding the use of the drones, however. It appeared to be a totally U.S.-directed operation.

Furthermore, the Predators seemed to be merely one component of a rapidly increasing U.S. presence in Mexico"

Al-Qaeda Grows in Yemen

"Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula—arguably the most immediate threat to U.S. interests of all the al-Qaeda affiliates—takes sanctuary in this fragile country. A downward spiral following the collapse of Yemen’s government would only make matters worse for the United States.

Al-Qaeda is already taking advantage of the unstable situation. Its fighters have increased attacks on Yemeni security forces and checkpoints.

With the regime looking increasingly fragile, the fear is that the frequency and the magnitude of these attacks will escalate. And as the regime is more distracted with this political crisis,

al-Qaeda has more space to plan and launch operations.

The next government will likely be more responsive to the Yemeni people.

There is already a significant dislike of American policy in Yemen and US counter-terrorism operations are deeply unpopular."

"Japan is unable to focus on recovery. On Monday morning, Miyagi prefecture, the worst hit, was shaken by a 6.5 magnitude offshore earthquake"

Shintaro Matsumoto, an official at Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, said this was the highest figure measured in the six-reactor unit since it lost vital cooling functions following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Hidehiko Nishiyama, a spokesman for the Agency said, "There is a strong possibility that the water is from the reactor core." Japanese authorities have extended the evacuation zone around the crippled plant from a 20- to 30-km radius."

"Officials of the Tokyo Electric Power Co., which owns the facility, also said that tests last week found trace levels of plutonium in soil outside the plant, an indication that the containment vessel of reactor No. 3, the only one that is fueled with plutonium, may have been breached"

Plutonium is highly carcinogenic if breathed in or ingested. Company officials said the element was found in samples at five separate sites on the grounds of the facility, suggesting that contaminated water from reactor No. 3 had seeped into the soil. No. 3 is fueled with a mixture of plutonium and uranium.

Engineers said the level of radioactivity in the water was 1 sievert per hour. A 30-minute exposure to that level would trigger nausea and potential hair loss; a 4-hour exposure would probably be lethal within a month."

The Myth of Sunni Power

"The population of the Muslim countries east of Egypt through the Persian Gulf—Lebanon (40% Shia), Syria (15%), Jordan (2%), Yemen (45%), Saudi Arabia (10%), Iraq (63%), Kuwait (30%), Iran (93%), Oman (2%), UAE (15%), Qatar (5%) and Bahrain (70%)—totals about 190 million. Although there are different sects within Shia Islam, the indisputable number of Shia in Iran and Iraq total about 86 million, or over 45% of the region’s total population; conservative estimates for the Shia in the remaining countries bring the total number of Shia to 106 million or 56% of the region’s population.

In short, the Shia are the majority in the area that might be considered the "heart" of the Middle East, including all the countries of the Persian Gulf, the Arabian Peninsula and the Levant, and the area that holds the region’s vast oil and natural gas reserves."
