Binocular Snapshot for 3/29/2011

LastDayWatchers the lukewarm, gullible sleepwalkers do not know and have not discern; the so-called "bloodbath" averted in Libya is the same as "WMD" in Iraq; Selah; which is why God will continue His curse of the Bush/Obama Administrations as

The death toll from an attack on the Iraqi provincial council headquarters in Tikrit rose to 45 on Tuesday

"Jasim al-Dulaimi, head of the health operations center in Salahuddin province, said three provincial council members and seven insurgents were among the dead."

"A government spokesman said that among those who died were 15 hostages who were killed in execution-style before their captors blew themselves up"

The attackers set off car bombs, explosive belts and hand grenades as they stormed into the building and took hostages, according to local officials.

Among the dead were three provincial council members and an Iraqi journalist. A further 65 people were wounded during the siege, which was eventually brought to an end by security forces after several hours. Seven gunmen are also believed to have been killed."

"A police colonel, Imad Nofan, and his deputy were killed in the car bombing,"

the police official said. The same explosion also killed journalist Sabah al-Bazi, who had reported for several local and international news organisations, the police official and other sources said."

Taliban Seize District in Eastern Afghanistan

"The Taliban seized control of a district in eastern Nuristan Province on Tuesday, chasing the district governor and police from the district capital, according to both Afghan officials and a spokesman for the Taliban.

It was the second Taliban success in recent days in the general area of the strategic Pech Valley, which American troops are in the process of withdrawing from and turning over to Afghan authorities.

Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, in a statement to news organizations circulated by email

“The white flag of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is flying over the Want District center, while some policemen of the puppet administration flee toward the provincial capital after slight resistance,”

Waygal District, mountainous and lightly populated with about 50,000 residents, is normally reached by traversing the Pech Valley, and has been under control of only Afghan National Police.

While the Taliban are present in a majority of districts in Afghanistan, the capture of administrative centers in the districts is relatively rare.

Last year the Taliban seized control of another mountainous district in northern Nuristan, Barg-e-Matal, and American troops had to be brought in to restore it to Afghan control.

Mr. Mujahid said the insurgents surrounded the district seat late Monday night, and by morning had subdued it, capturing 12 policemen and seizing 19 truckloads of equipment and supplies.

"Recently the invaders’ big General Petraeus talked about improvements in Afghanistan, but our recent successful operation has shown that our mujahedeen can launch a big operation with high morale, and defeat the security forces of an entire district, which shows the falseness of General Petraeus’ claims,"

“The Taliban still retain the ability to initiate attacks in isolated areas with short-term success,” said a spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, Lt. Col. John L. Dorrian"

3 US-led soldiers killed in Afghan war

"Three US-led soldiers have been killed in eastern Afghanistan as Taliban militants step up their violent campaign against foreign forces in the war-ravaged country.

The soldiers whose nationalities are not known died in what has been called separate attacks by Taliban militants. The deaths push to 104 the number of NATO troops killed in Afghanistan in 2011."
