Binocular Snapshot for 3/09/2011

LastDayWatchers take good note in your observations to the results; of how much of an increase & expansion to the failures of Israel (lost & found) war campaign; because of God curse of the Bush/Obama Administrations

Baghdad blast kills Iraqi army general

"Elsewhere in Baghdad, a blast in the Karradat Mariam neighbourhood on the edge of the heavily-fortified Green Zone, left five people wounded

A roadside bomb attack in east Baghdad killed an Iraqi army general on Wednesday while violence across the capital wounded 13 people, including a US soldier.

Brigadier General Taha Ahmed Samir, head of training for Iraq's nascent air force, was killed when a military convoy he was in was hit by the blast in Al-Kanat street"

Blast shut down Iraq Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline-sources

"A bomb attack in the northern province of Nineveh halted oil flow through the Iraq-Turkey pipeline, which carries a quarter of Iraq's crude exports, a spokesman for Iraq's oil ministry said on Wednesday.

On Feb. 26, militants attacked Iraq's largest oil refinery, killing four workers and detonating bombs that touched off a raging fire and shut down the plant in northern Iraq.

Iraq's oil infrastructure has come under attack frequently since 2003, hampering Iraqi efforts to boost lacklustre oil production and exports above pre-invasion levels."

Blast kills US-led troop in Afghan war

"An International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service member died following an improvised explosive device attack in southern Afghanistan today," the alliance said in a press release on Wednesday.

Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are by far the most lethal weapon Taliban militants use against foreign troops, Afghan forces, and civilians, bringing the number of coalition forces killed in the war-torn country to 76 so far this year.

Insecurity is on the increase across the war-torn country despite the presence of over 150,000 US-led forces there"

"The number of civilians killed as a result of fighting in this war-torn nation rose by 15 percent in 2010 as compared with 2009"

Aside from the general increase in insurgent caused civilian deaths,

There was a 105 percent increase in assassinations and an 83 percent increase in abductions during 2010.

"I am worried that they are very resilient but we will see as the violence statistics start to come in during the fighting season"

"Many U.S. and Western troops cannot leave their bases without encountering IEDs or more coordinated attacks from insurgents. U.S. and NATO forces don't control territory"

For Dorronsoro, the crucial metric is security, not number of bad guys and suspected bad guys killed.

Given that he can't drive to places that he freely visited two or three years ago, he judges that security in the country has gotten worse, not better.

How many people have said "We can't kill our way to victory"?

The situation today is worse than it was a year ago, before the surge of 30,000 additional troops.

Effective counterinsurgencies (COIN) are waged by a credible local partner, a government that commands the respect and authority of its citizens. That obviously doesn't exist in Afghanistan. The Afghan militia, supposedly the key to long-term success, is completely ineffective.

We cannot win Afghanistan without turning Pakistan, but we cannot turn the Pakistanis without winning in Afghanistan."

Suicide bomber kills 37 at Pakistan funeral

"A Taliban suicide bomber attacked a funeral in northwest Pakistan on Wednesday, killing 37 people in the latest in a string of Islamist militant attacks aimed at undermining Pakistan's U.S.-backed government.

"It was like doomsday ... There were dead and injured lying all around"

said resident Anwar Khan, who went to help after the blast.

The attack came a day after militants set off a car-bomb at a natural gas filling station in the central city of Faisalabad killing 25 people and wounding about 125.

Pakistani Taliban fighting to bring down the U.S.-backed government also claimed responsibility for that attack."

"Today's attack was in northwest Pakistan, where locals fighting the Taliban presence in their area are increasingly skeptical of government promises of protection"
