Binocular Snapshot for 2/27/2011

LastDayWatchers have you taken note of the attacks in Afghanistan that are happening during the "hibernation" season ?, what do you think is going to happen during the fighting season ?

A pair of explosions tore through a group of spectators at an illegal dogfight in southern Afghanistan on Sunday, killing eight people

"Injuring more than a dozen in the latest of a string of deadly insurgent attacks

In the past five weeks, more than 100 people, most of them Afghan civilians, have been killed in bloody assaults that have leapfrogged the length and breadth of the country.

The targets -- a supermarket, shopping mall, bank, wedding hall, government records office and sporting event -- have one thing in common: people congregated there.

The sense of fear and insecurity inspired by carefully calculated attacks in populated areas undermines the Western goal of building confidence in the Afghan government and security forces

The village targeted Sunday was a relatively small one, in the Arghandab district of Kandahar province. But it lies not far from Kandahar city, the main hub of the country's south, where at least 16 people were killed this month in a coordinated assault by gunmen and suicide bombers in the heart of the city."

"Also in the south, a NATO service member was killed by a bomb blast, the international military coalition said"

The force did not provide the victim’s nationality or other details.

Officials in Kandahar city said that a NATO vehicle there hit a roadside bomb and that either dead or wounded were carried away in a helicopter, though it was not clear if this was the same incident. The Taleban claimed responsibility for the Kandahar city blast."

At least 29 dead in Iraq protests

"At least 29 people died in demonstrations across Iraq, where security forces detained about 300 people, including journalists, witnesses said.

Deaths -- including that of a 14-year-old boy -- were reported in at least eight cities, including Fallujah, Mosul and Tikrit

Witnesses said security forces fired live bullets and water cannons at demonstrators Friday and described the detentions as an operation to frighten intellectuals who could influence public opinion.

Four journalists detained in Baghdad said they were blindfolded, handcuffed, beaten and threatened with execution before being released Saturday.

"It was like they were dealing with a bunch of al-Qaida operatives, not a group of journalists," said Hussan al-Ssairi, one of the journalists detained. "Yesterday was like a test, like a picture of the new democracy in Iraq."

Ssairi said he and his colleagues were sitting at an outdoor restaurant about 2 miles from Baghdad's Tahrir Square, where the demonstrations were focused. He said security forces arrived in two Humvees and started beating a group of people, including a journalist.

"We said, 'What are you doing -- we're journalists!'" said journalist Hadi al-Mahdi. "And they said '(expletive) journalism."

Also take note of the failure of the so-called "Iron Dome" with just a warning shot!

A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip hit Israeli territory on Sunday morning, raising Israel's alert level

"The latest rocket, which the military's spokeswoman said struck a field in the Eshkol region in southern Israel, comes after a string of Israeli air raids targeting militant training camps across the Gaza Strip on Saturday night.

The air raids came after tensions rose along the Israel-Gaza border this week following clashes in which an Islamic Jihad gunman was killed and a rocket attack on the Israeli city of Beersheba

It was the first rocket to reach the city since the devastating offensive Israel waged against Gaza December 2008 to January 2009, prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to warn the territory's militants not to "test" the Jewish state.

"The security examination was undertaken after the new Palestinian rocket fire on Sunday and because of the continued unrest in the Arab and Muslim world,"

Buffett's annual letter, released Saturday, is brimming with references to the strength of the American people, economy and spirit

"Money will always flow toward opportunity, and there is an abundance of that in America," said Buffett, who has run Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire Hathaway since 1965 and is now one of the world's richest men.

Investors said they were struck by how confident the letter was, particularly in comparison to his annual missives of recent years

"The prophets of doom have overlooked the all-important factor that is certain: Human potential is far from exhausted, and the American system for unleashing that potential ... remains alive and effective."

He also forecast a recovery in the housing market "within a year or so" and that "America's best days lie ahead."

Buffett is likely aware of the impact of his comments. In last year's letter he lamented at some length how too much had been made in the media of comments the year before on the state of the economy.

It is also possible Buffett could boost the market on his own through an acquisition."
