Resentment builds in Iran over price hikes, overhaul of state subsidies

"Nearly a week after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad launched a plan to overhaul a long-standing system of state subsidies, Iranians are reeling from drastic government-ordered price increases for staples such as fuel and bread amid signs of growing frustration and anger."

But the truth is

In fact European countries across the board, from the UK and Ireland to Portugal and Greece, were have to impose strict austerity measures.

“We think these sanctions will have no effect on our decision-making process,” said Ahmadinejad, according to the official simultaneous translation of Thursday's press conference. “Those countries that talk about the effect of sanctions in the third millennium are backward and simple-minded…. So these sanctions cannot work and will fail, especially with a great nation like Iran.”

“They wanted to hurt our economy; instead now it’s their own economies that are hurting,” said Ahmadinejad, according to the real-time official translator. “This is the work and the will of Allah.”

God curse of the Bush/Obama Administration continues

House bombings kill five in Iraq

"Two houses were blown up on Friday south of Baghdad, killing five people, including three children, and wounding four other people, Iraqi police said.

The pre-dawn attacks occurred within four hours of each other in Qariya al-Asriya near Iskandiriya, a city considered an Al-Qaeda stronghold before the militants were pushed out by Iraqi and American forces in 2008.

Police said among those killed were a man, a woman and three children -- one of them a one-year-old -- and the wounded included a woman, a young man, and two children."

Attacks kill 12 in Pakistan

"Eleven soldiers were killed Friday when about 150 militants fired at five security forces checkpoints in the northwest Pakistan tribal region, a government official said.

The attack injured 12 others, said Amjad Ali Khan, the government official in Mohmand Agency.
It happened in Mohmand Agency, one of seven districts bordering Afghanistan.

Twenty-four militants were killed, and the rest fled, said two military officials.
The officials asked not to be named because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

In a separate attack Friday, a roadside bomb blast killed a police officer and wounded three others in Quetta, police said.

The bomb -- planted on bicycle -- exploded when a patrolling police van was passing by, according to Malik Muhammad Iqbal, police chief of Baluchistan province."
