Insurgent attacks ripple across Afghanistan

"Violence hopscotched across Afghanistan on Saturday, as a suicide bomber killed 10 people in a northern province and coalition troops repelled an assault by a squad of gunmen and suicide bombers on a base in the country's east region.

In Afghanistan's south, North Atlantic Treaty Organization forces reported the deaths of three service members in an insurgent attack. It did not provide details or release the nationalities of those killed, but most of the troops serving in the south are Americans.

The heightened tempo of attacks comes days before NATO nations gather for a summit to consider the course of the alliance's Afghan mission.

The insurgents appear eager to demonstrate that setbacks in the south, where the U.S. military has claimed major progress in breaking the Taliban grip on districts surrounding Kandahar city, will not hinder them from regrouping elsewhere.

U.S. Marines have also been suffering significant casualties in recent weeks as they stage an aggressive push in Helmand province, which neighbors Kandahar."

-"NATO's International Security Assistance Force said insurgents are continuing "to engage in indiscriminate attacks

which put Afghan civilians in harm's way" despite guidance from the Quetta Shura, the leadership of the Afghan Taliban, to protect civilians.

ISAF said that since the beginning of the month, "insurgents have engaged in at least 47 acts of indiscriminate violence" in civilian areas.
In a separate attack, at least one suicide bomber struck the airport area of Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan"

"Violence is at its worst across Afghanistan since the Taliban were overthrown in 2001, and civilian and military casualties are at record levels despite the presence of 150,000 foreign troops"

In Jalalabad, near Pakistan, at least eight insurgents, including two suicide bombers, attacked a forward operating base run by the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) which shares the main airport.

Smoke rose from the area and explosions and gunfire were heard, a Reuters witness said. Helicopters flew overhead and the bodies of at least one suicide bomber and one other attacker were seen near the airport."
