Death toll rises to 12 in Afghan suicide attack

"The death toll from a suicide bombing in northern Afghanistan has increased to 12, a spokesman for the governor of Faryab province said Saturday.

At least 26 were injured from attack at a crowded marketplace on Friday, Ahamad Jaweed Bedar said. Previously, a government official had said at least five people died and 35 were wounded from the blast.

Bedar said Rahmatiullah Turkistani, head of the provincial council, was targeted. The bomber approached the official with a petition when he blew himself up, a deputy to the governor of Faryab said Friday, a guard for Turkistani -- along with 11 civilians -- were killed."

"Afghan soldier turned his weapon on American troops"

killing two soldiers.

The Afghan soldier fled after the shooting, which took place at a military base in southern Helmand Province on Friday, and Taliban insurgents said he had taken refuge with them.

“It does look like something along those lines has happened but it is still under investigation,” said Lt. Col. John L. Dorrian of the Air Force, a spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF.

Afghan military officials also said they were conducting their own investigation. Investigators were treating it as a crime rather than an act of war, according to a NATO official.

A spokesman for the Taliban in southern Afghanistan, Qari Yousuf Ahmad, claimed that the soldier killed three Americans at a joint Afghan and American military base in the Sangin district at 2 a.m. Friday, then fled and sought refuge with the Taliban. “He is now protected by the Taliban and has been taken to a safe location,” Mr. Ahmad said.

The shooting, if confirmed, would be the most recent in a series of turncoat attacks by Afghan soldiers on their NATO allies. In August in northern Badghis Province, two Spanish police officers and their Spanish-Afghan interpreter were killed by an Afghan policeman, who officials said was a Taliban agent.

In July, also in Helmand Province in the south, an Afghan soldier shot and killed three British soldiers; Taliban insurgents claimed responsibility.

Foreign police officers and soldiers are actively training and mentoring their Afghan counterparts as they seek to hand over more responsibility to them as part of what NATO calls its “transition” strategy, with many contributing nations seeking to reduce their presence in Afghanistan by the end of 2011.

Two coalition soldiers were killed on Saturday in insurgent attacks, one in eastern Afghanistan and the other in the south, according to ISAF. Their nationalities were not released pending notification of next of kin.

On Friday, at least 10 people were killed and 25 were wounded when a suicide bomber tried to kill a provincial official at a market in Faryab Province, northern Afghanistan. The official survived, but a bodyguard and bystanders were killed, said the provincial police chief, Khalilullah Andarabi."
