Blasts in Baghdad kill at least 50

"(CNN) -- At least 50 people were killed and 75 wounded in a wave of blasts across Baghdad on Tuesday, police said.

There were 14 explosions. Ten were car bombs, three were roadside bombs, and another was what's called a sticky bomb -- a device that's placed on an object, many times a vehicle.

Explosions struck the Shiite neighborhoods of Kadhimiya in the northwest, Amil, Bayaa and Shulaa in the southwest, Ur and Zuhour in the northeast, Sadr City, Kamaliya and Amin in the east and Abu Dhsir in the southern part of the city.

Other blasts struck mixed Sunni-Shiite neighborhoods, including Waziriya, Yarmouk, Jihad and Eghraiat.
During the height of the Iraq war, Baghdad was beset with daily sectarian violence in Sunni and Shiite neighborhoods.

The incidents come two days after a hostage standoff at a Catholic church in Baghdad that left 58 people dead.

Seventy-five others were wounded in the attack by gunmen Sunday, officials said, adding that most of the casualties were women and children.

That hours-long standoff ended Sunday after Iraqi security forces stormed the Sayidat al-Nejat church."

The Failure continue to mount up

Yadlin testifies in front of Knesset's FADC for last time, says Syria preserving its relationship with Iran and Hizbullah, as well as keeping option of peace deal with Israel open

"Outgoing Head of Military Intelligence General Amos Yadlin made his final appearance in front of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday, saying that he has seen "three defense ministers, two chiefs of the general staff and two prime ministers, gone through two wars and dealt with two nuclear programs in enemy countries." The last comment, apparently making reference to a Syrian nuclear program.

"I stood in front of a group of thousands of people who work 24 hours a day to gather information that the enemy does not volunteer, information that needs to be extracted from difficult places in order to be processed, to investigate and prepare analyses so that I may pass them on" to those who rely on them, Yadlin told the committee.

Yadlin told the committee that Russia is supplying Syria with new anti-aircraft systems with the most mobile and advanced technology. He said that the systems could send the IDF and IAF's capabilities "back to their status in the 1970s Suez years."

"With the S-300, we are talking about relatively cheap missiles - but no less deadly," Yadlin warned in his final session with the committee. He also said that the Russians are upgrading older Syrian weapons systems. Describing the weapons trade benefiting Damascus, the MI chief said that the Syrians are conducting "very intense efforts to acquire weapons that are very very advanced - so advanced that everything that falls off of the production line in Russia ends up in Syria."

Indonesia volcano shoots new blast; 21 more rumble

"Deafening explosions of hot gas rattled evacuees miles (kilometers) from an Indonesian volcano Monday, the latest eruption in a deadly week. The country reported increased rumblings at 21 other active volcanoes, raising questions about what's causing the uptick along some of the world's most volatile fault lines

The government has raised alert levels of 21 other volcanos to the second- and third- highest levels in the last two months because they have shown an increase in activity, said Syamsul Rizal, a state volcanologist, said Monday. Many of those are already rumbling and belching out heavy black ash.

It is rare for any to be at second-highest — which signifies an eruption is possible within two weeks.

Geologist Brent McInnes said as he hadn't seen the raw data but would find such a rash of volcanic activity significant.

"If it's true that there are over 20 volcanos demonstrating increased levels of seismic activity, then that is something we should pay attention to," said McInnes, a professor at Australia's Curtin University who has done extensive volcanic research in Indonesia.

"Anak Krakatua, a volcano known as the "Child of Krakatoa" also started shooting lava last week"

Although the firebursts look spectacular, there were no immediate signs of major eruption, said Anton Tripambudi, a government seismologist.

The mountain, about 80 miles west of Jakarta, was formed after the Krakatoa eruption of 1883, the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history that, along with a tsunami, killed at least 36,417 people. He said such an increase could indicate "a major plate restructuring" — a major shift in the plates' position, rather than simply the usual jostling. "That would be significant."
