Baghdad Attack Kills at Least a Dozen

"At least 12 people, including five suicide bombers, were killed and 29 others wounded Sunday in what officials here said was a sophisticated attack against Iraqi army facilities in central Baghdad, just days after the U.S. ended its combat mission.

The late-morning attack occurred in Maidan Square, the same place where a suicide bomber blew himself up last month among crowds of young men lining up for an army recruitment drive. That attack killed almost 50, and the Islamic State of Iraq, a group linked to al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for it.

In the latest attack on Sunday, a "group consisting of five terrorists wearing suicide vests and boarding an explosives-rigged Kia bus approached the backdoor of the old Ministry of Defense building,"

According to a statement by the Baghdad Operations Command, the government task force in charge of security in the capital."

"The base was a defence ministry headquarters under Saddam Hussein and now serves as an army recruitment centre as well as a military command"

"Witnesses said they saw gunmen in one mainly Sunni district nearby. The area became an al Qaeda stronghold at the height in 2006/07 of the sectarian warfare unleashed after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, and remained dangerous until mid-2009"

General Says Foresight on Marja Was Flawed

"NATO commanders were overly optimistic when they predicted quick success last winter in taking the town of Marja from the Taliban, the outgoing deputy commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan said"

"General Parker acknowledged that he, too, was “a little bit too positive,” because he wanted to stiffen the resolve of United States Marines and Afghan troops who overran Marja, a major Taliban logistics center, in February and announced plans for an effective Afghan administration. The idea was to develop Marja as a model for counterinsurgency techniques in the hope that other communities would turn against the Taliban.

Instead, the Taliban have fought back. That has fueled doubts on Capitol Hill and among the American public that the Afghan war can be won"
