Bomb kills 2 traffic cops at Baghdad precinct

"Officials say a rush-hour bombing at a western Baghdad police precinct has killed two traffic cops and one civilian.

Police and hospital officials say five traffic cops and four civilians were also wounded in the bombing at the gates of the Ghazaliyah precinct headquarters.

They say the civilians were waiting in line to get their car licenses and registrations. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.
Monday's bombing is the latest targeting Baghdad's traffic police force"

Taliban launch attacks on U.S., Afghan military posts

"Taliban insurgents staged attacks on three combat posts of Afghan and U.S. forces on Monday in a southeastern Afghan province, an official for the U.S. military said.

The official did not say how many militants were involved in the attacks or give any details about the type of the strikes in Paktika province, which lies near the border with Pakistan.

"The fighting is going on. I can't give you further details," Sergeant Stephanie Widemond told Reuters by phone"

U.S. and EU fail to isolate Iran

"China, Russia, India and Turkey move into the lucrative void left by U.S. and EU sanctions that aim to halt Iran's nuclear program"

"Efforts by the United States and its European allies to build a united front to halt Iran's nuclear program are facing increasingly bold resistance from China, Russia, India and Turkey, which are rushing to boost their economies by seizing investment opportunities in defiance of sanctions imposed by the West"

"all four have moved ahead with trade and investment deals that violate the sanctions or threaten to do so in the future"

"The countries say they will honor the weaker set of sanctions imposed on Iran in June by the U.N. Security Council, but are under no obligation to follow the more stringent rules that the United States and European Union tacked on in July"

Although China's economic ties with Iran have been growing for 15 years, the recent expansion of its business "has been amazing," said a senior European official, who asked to remain unidentified because of the diplomatic sensitivity of the issue.

"Sanctions will not hinder us in our joint cooperation," Sergei Shmatko, Russia's energy minister, declared last month in Moscow after signing an agreement for a long-term energy partnership with his Iranian counterpart"

"In recent days, senior officials of both countries have rejected calls from Washington to back off their business with Iran.

Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang told the visiting Iranian oil minister on Friday that China remained firmly committed to joint projects, calling Iran "an important trade partner."

Nasrallah describes 1997 ambush

"Hezbollah chief claims intercepted Israeli drone transmissions, used footage to set up ambush for commando troops, killing 12. In same speech Nasrallah also accuses Israel of involvement in Hariri murder plot"

The best defense

"The next several days will witness several rounds of discussion and debate about the credibility of Nasrallah's presentation. On the one hand, there can be no doubt that the revelation of Hizbullah's ability to access Israeli surveillance footage will be regarded as a stunning feat and another feather in Hizbullah's cap. Not since the famous "burning ship" address during the July War -- during which real-time footage of an Israeli Navy corvette engulfed in flames after being hit by two anti-ship missiles was displayed -- has Hizbullah's military prowess been demonstrated in so public a fashion"

Nasrallah unveils ‘Israeli footage’ of Hariri route

"The footage included shots of what Nasrallah said was Hariri’s path to his vacation residence in Faqra, Kesrouan, as well as the city of Sidon, with a focus on the residence of his brother, Shafik.

“And there are no Hizbullah centers or homes of officials in these areas,” he said.

Nasrallah added that the resistance had begun assembling the footage only in the last two years, from an accumulated store of material, and hadn’t had time to compile similar excerpts of Israeli reconnaissance around the areas frequented by other politicians who were assassinated in the wake of Hariri’s killing.

“This isn’t definitive proof,” he said, “but it opens up new horizons for the investigations.”

Nasrallah added that the aerial reconnaissance footage was necessarily incomplete, because the resistance was unable to crack some of its encoding.

“Just because we don’t have footage of [a given location], doesn’t mean the Israelis didn’t take pictures of it,” he said.

The secretary general said his party wouldn’t present the evidence to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, since he had “no trust” in the body, but expressed his hope that the Lebanese government would act on it.

He added that if the STL ignored the material, “it will confirm our logic, that it’s politicized.”

Iran ‘reiterates’ support for Lebanon against Israeli threat

"On Monday, Shami said Lebanon was preparing to file a complaint with the UN Security Council and General Assembly regarding Israeli espionage activities in Lebanon. “The report is now ready,” he added.

In the last year, more than 70 people have been arrested in the spy probe, among them members of the security forces as well as telecommunications employees"

"Hariri’s assassination became a playing card for the US whose Bush administration had included Syria in the notorious “axis of evil,” showering it with accusations of all sorts, from the support of terrorism (although right after Sept. 11, 2001 Damascus shared all the intelligence data on Al-Qaeda’s activities in the region with Washington) to the creation of weapons of mass destruction."
